Mardi Gras Indians (or Black Masking Indians) are a historic New Orleans subculture, originating in the late 1800s, who mask as Native Americans to honor Indigenous tribes that sheltered runaway enslaved people. The tradition honors African, Caribbean, and Native American roots with elaborate, handmade suits of beads and feathers worn for street processions. This piece is part of my series "The Gospel According to New Orleans and I painted it to honor Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, a living legend.

Ain't Dere No More....The much beloved Circle Bar on what was formerly known as Lee Circle. I painted this from photos I took there long ago while listening to friends play. One of my first visits to New Orleans, an especially long time ago, included a really fun, really rowdy evening at the Circle Bar. Such fond memories and I'm sure lots of locals feel the same about one of New Orleans' long ago iconic dive bars!

“Divine Clutter in the Bywater” Painted from a series of photos I took long ago at a friend of a friend’s house on Mardi Gras Day during the Saint Anne Parade. Of course I had to throw in some of my favorite things!

It’s a personal narrative piece but also timely as we are all working on keeping it all together. The cloche is filled with the pieces of me, the broken blue willow china of my grandmother which I’ve loved since childhood — symbolizing the broken home, dice for chance, marbles--as in hoping not to lose my marbles, and a favorite tiny doll of my childhood. Small Japanese figurines, WW2 era, rest on the table and there’s a list to keep it all together under the car keys
The women in “The Conversation” needed something to converse about, so I added some impending doom in the background! I took a photo of this spectacular sunset in Waveland MS. I paint stories & here are 2 women looking at their laptops. What are they doing? Are they communicating with each other? Are they engaged with each other at all? Are they sisters? Lovers? Spouses? Mother & daughter? Best friends? Are they happy? Mad? Sad? Of course they are mostly engaged with their devices because that’s the thing people are most engaged with now rather than each other.

2nd in the series, original 1901 photograph, restored, hand paintinged with acrylic paint, embelisshed with rhinetones. This piece is not perfect due to age (125 years old) are not perfect and their flaws are not completely covered. The piece should to be appreciated with it’s notable flaws.

This painting has been a work in progress since 2019 because it kept speaking to me. It encompasses many elements of my story represented in this still life of our home; from my early years through my current life. The heirlooms that we treasure are always there, reminding us from whence we came. This chair and the rug have been in my husband's family for a very very long time. I've always been in love with this Mandarin chair & it is a symbol of family history. The Chinese Double Happiness jars symbolize happiness. My grandmother's Blue Willow china keeps showing up in my work.
Portraits of chairs have long been a favorite subject of mine.
